FACTS about LED lights

LED lights are the future of lighting, make no mistake. Compared to Halogens they are more efficient, last longer, result in smaller home cooling bills and practically eliminate the risk of fire, however we need to clarify some misinformation:

  • LEDs produce 5 times the light output per Watt compared to Halogens. To achieve a 50Watt equivalent light output LED globes have to run at a minimum of 10Watts.
  • LED diodes produce more light and last longer if they run at a lower temperature, that's why it's important to choose an appropriate downlight fixture.
  • Some companies falsely exaggerate their bulbs power as 3x3W (9W), however the smaller MR16 housing/heat sink can only handle 5W at most, the same goes for our 3X3W CREE 5W MR16 globes. All 3X3W CREE MR16 LED globes only run at around 5W. Our larger heat sink globes can and do run higher at 8W and produce around 40W of equivalent Halogen light. That's 60% more light than 3x3W (9W) globes with the smaller MR16 housing.
  • LEDs do have a harshness to them due to their light spectrum, which is why we have spent so long handpicking and matching our LEDs for an optimal soft colour and maximum light output.
  • Some companies claim 50,000 even 100,000 hours lifetimes, while this is true technically, in reality LEDs lose brightness over time the rate of which is depended on their running temperature and the quality of the LEDs. This is why it is important to choose the highest quality diodes such as the American manufactured CREE LEDs and to keep them cool using superior large heat sinks.
